Kingfisher with lotus flower.
By Koson Ohara (1877-19450
The lotus flower is connected with purity and spirituality since it is revered for its ability to rise from the dirty, murky waters to bloom into a beautiful flower - a process symbolising enlightenment in which we can rise above suffering in the same way as the lotus by moving from the lowest to the highest state of consciousness. The artist Koson Ohara was the most famous and prolific 20th century print artist of the animal and birds genre in Japan.
